This blows...

Bah…Im going to go kill someone at comcast for this! I am at SHI at 2am an suddenly I lose my connection...An I stayed up tell 5am waiting for it to come back on...Now I just woke up...And guess what I found?!?!?!?I am dead! And this blows because I didnt even have a cloan...Bah...An I even took the time to write a two page history for this guy...

::grabs a shotgun and starts walking toward the nearest comcast office::

Edit: And to add too this shit...I found three virruses on my computer ::twitch, twitch::

(Edited by Bert at 6:18 am on Dec. 27, 2001)

Well Bert, you shouldn't have gone to the light. Players without clones still have a chance of coming back from permadeath if their body is put into the tank at Genetek. If you're still in Limbo then no problem, you'll be cloned and you're back into the game.

So.. in my kindness I was going to clone your corpse due to your unfortunate connection issue.. BUT you'd already gone to The End and therefore it's now impossible.

For you other players who happen to perma, just remember this… if you don't want to completely kill off your character, stick around in Limbo and see if some nice person goes to clone your corpse.

Sorry Bert...

Bah….Thanks for trying FS..

::goes to blow of some heads at comcast::

Hrm, that's good to know.

And I feel your pain Bert, my charcter died too, and I was even locked up in my apartment… And I had all my chyen on me... and a P-9 cell, a quickterm, and a WJF helmet...

I'm still having a hard time getting my helmet back. They say it's gonna cost my 7900... jeez.

When are you guys gonna give me my headset? Please?

*falls to his knees, begging*

::looks at Jad and smirks::Alls well…I needed a break from SD anyways...Plus I dont have to pay off my 6 thousand chyen fine now XD. Or that 45 chyen Gerik loaned me.

Well im gona go check out the dark side for now...With all the admins who dont give a rats ass about you an all...Thats right!CS!::waves::Later for now.

Several things here.

First. The admin try and keep newbie death down. The connection thing has been going on for a while. But its not MOOside, its usually routers… which we have no control over. Its just dumb luck. I am very sorry it happened, but its not something the admin can do anything about. It is -very- unIC for us to move someone elsewhere unless we -know- they are having connection problems.

That is why when the server drops, everyone wakes up in a coffin. They are safe, not in the streets. If your computer or connection dies, normally players will let you go. I have seen it many times. However, there are a few that may take advantage of such a situation and kill someone off.

Now, to the players who go around killing. There isn't anything wrong with it, don't get me wrong... but killing newbies, or people that have yet to get a clone is not right in my opinion. I am assuming that FS agrees with me, since he was going to ICly clone you. Death is part of the game, that is very evident... but killing someone who's sleeping in a public place (unless there is IC reason...) is something that I know for a fact several players frown upon. Just seeing older players drag someone to a cube shows how much different people care for others, IC and OOC.

Then again, there may be IC actions that go for this. In which case, none of this holds any water. Sure, someone could rob you blind and drag you to a cube... but killing is something different. You never know, maybe someone else saw the murder. Its all IC.

Now.... Jadael.... IC is IC, please keep it that way. And about the headset... at the moment, the coders we have (who are all damned good I might add), are already pressed with current code. Vehicles, combat, stealth, NLMs, and weapons are a few of these projects. The ones you already know about. There is more that is coming soon, just wait for it.

Finally... Bert I do take your quote: Well im gona go check out the dark side for now...With all the admins who dont give a rats ass about you an all...Thats right!CS!::waves::Later for now."

I have said it before, and will repeat. Sindome is one of the best M**'s I have seen when it comes to Player-Admin relationships. When someone askes for help, unless there isn't an admin there, they usually get it. If there is a problem, its worked out. What happened to you Bert was compeltly out of the hands of the admin. FS even tried to save you, but you had already killed Bert permanatly. What happened to you is rare, its happened a few times in the past... (usually with reason) I do appologize for it, but if you are simply going to leave because your first character got killed, thats fine. Its your decision. I do want to ask you to stay, get another char, and interact with the other players and admin more. Get to know them. The experience was worthwhile to me while I was a player, in the good and bad times.

Thats all I really have to say for now. I'd be happy to talk to you one-on-one about a new character if you'd like. Or about the situation, just log on and ask for me. (Or any other admin for that matter.)

Wren…You didnt have to type up that whole thing. I knew it wasnt any admins fault an all...It was my fault for not being cautous. I knew comcast were transfering to their own servers but I didnt think about it enough to relize that there was going to be down times an down times that were most likley to happen in the early early morning.

An this is was my second Char btw. An I have nothing against SD. The only reason im leaving is because I need a break. I need to go check out some other MOO's to see how stuff is. I will return, I would have to be a total nut not too.  With the great admin's an all.

BTW:CS blows...Been waiting for about 5-6 hours to get approved...When I asked for help some jackass admin said email this dude an went AFK for a long while without even helping me in the slightest way...An these people know nothing of rp...I go in as a guest an a dude go up to me an asks how im doing by the guest accounts name....I mean he is going, 'Hey, whats up Weed?'

Bah…My brain is fried from all these strange MOO's that know nothing of rp...I need sleep...Later all
A snippet of near useless but relevant information. If you drop link without entering '@quit' you are actually kill protected for a short amount of time to try and prevent incidents like this. That said, we can't kill protect you forever since it wouldn't be fair, but usually it's long enough to re-establish a connection. The smart will have already figured out a way to abuse this… so be warned, if we find -any- evidence of people dropping link deliberately to avoid combat it will result in bad things(tm).

For those thinking about abusing it, dropping link -during- combat will almost definately result in your death. Deliberately dropping link prior to combat probably won't leave you kill protected long enough to be of any use as an evasive technique.

I read CS's meta forum yesterday. It made me laugh.

CS == ComedySphere?

Send in the clowns.

Bah…Still no reply to my chargen...

(Edited by Bert at 3:15 pm on Dec. 28, 2001)

Eh? You don't need to @request again. Just go through char-gen with Bert (or a renamed Bert)

Log on as Bert if you get this message.

Heh…Ment at CS....
The first time I @requested at CS I waited a couple of weeks before logging on again and contacting an admin, only to be told, bluntly, that I should be patient.

So, I logged off and in the mean time found Sindome.

Perhaps a month later I happened to mention the CS situation to another player on SD. Wether they were CS admin or just contacted CS admin I don't know, but they told me to log on again as a guest which I did and was told my @request must have "somehow slipped through" as it was highly unusual for an @request to take more than a few days to generate a response…

I'd say something about first impressions lasting, but to be honest the first impression didn't need to last since they did a fine job of disappointing me at every turn from that day on. I could go on, but that would be boring... like CS.

Perhaps one day, when I'm old and grey, I'll sit around a roaring log fire with an ale in hand and tell crowds of young'uns my tales of CS woe...

I actually fell on CS right before I happened upon SD. And I mean this literally, about fifteen minutes prior. I watched their Flash movie, laughed at poor application of vector graphics (vector is nice with flat colors and low detail - gradients are mega tacky. If you want -complex- graphics in flash/vector then you either have to use a static bitmap or render a 3dsmax animation through the Illustrate! 'toon shader or some other swf exporter) and bad mixing from about a dozen songs that couldn't possibly fit together. But that's nitpicking - suffice to say that that was my first impression, and that I wasn't impressed. Then I logged on as a guest, I wandered about and had no idea what I was supposed to do.

So then I came to SinDome, I looked around the website - whoever designed it was very conscious of their graphic ability and didn't add tacky, useless effects (like lens flares) to try and impress pre-pubescent hipster-wannabes. The site is straightforward, well layed-out and, even better, TASTEFUL. And that green-grey is one of my favorite colors too. So, I thought, I'll give this a shot. Came in as a guest, then I decided to go through chargen, which was actually FUN(I'm crazy that way), I popped in, typed @newbie and knew exactly what I was supposed to do and how to get started with my character's life. In retrospect, I shoudn't have used the java client, as it doesn't REALLY delete when you press backspace, it just makes you THINK it does - Rastus can testify to how dyslexic my first history @register looked since he was the one to check it (laughed my ass off at it myself)

Well, anyway, to make a short story long, this is the very FIRST M* I've ever had ANY fun on. All the others I played (mostly MUDs though) never held my interest more than a few hours. This one has me hooked for, what, two months now?

I'm glad I don't have to kill rabbits for experience anymore.

*Jadael never liked killing rabbits for EXP*

Well said Murphy, and I agree totally about the site. Took the words right outta my mind.

Johnny would be the man to give -all- the credit for both this and the previous incarnation of the SD website (it being the previous one that hooked me). Talking for Johnny, I know the one thing he kept foremost in his mind while designing was keeping the 'weight' of the site down. He set out to make the whole sindome website slick and speedy to view and succeeded. Last week I was unfortunate enough to be stuck on 14.4 dial-up for 5 days and I can happily report that while not quite up to my usual cable speeds, sindome.org was one of the very few sites that could easily be browsed at an acceptable pace.

No disrespect at all to CS's website, Incog (?) did a damned good job of it's recent redesign. Flash is flash, respect to anyone who can do anything with it because I couldn't do a thing with flash to save my life. We discussed flash animation for the SD site and it was cast aside for purely bandwidth reasons. My impartial opinion, for all anyone will believe it's impartial, both sites are damned good, but the SD site has that touch of slick polish that the CS site lacks.

Flash used properly is a good thing and can work just as well on a slow modem as your highspeed internet. If you're designing a site for people who are predominantly using highspeed then creating a flash segment that isn't streamed and cut down sizewise isn't a big deal. Hell, my own site was like that, since I was just getting into it and didn't have the patience to redo all the little popups to load when clicked instead of at the start… but I ramble....

Last I visited the CS site they had removed the flash animation from their index page, so you didn't have to load and watch the whole damn thing everytime you visited the page (bonus).

Yes I'm still working on more SD graphics and have had thoughts of doing up some Flash stuff.. but I always get sidetracked. I did manage to crank out the Carnal Desires banner though (*cheap plug*). Bug me if you've got ideas for more banners.

I'm glad you found SD easy to use and navigate through. I know that parts of it are still quite wonky and hard to figure out, but we're working on it. We see mistakes made other places and try NOT to make those here.

My problem isn't really with Flash - hell, I -LIKE- Flash. Although I tired to build an interface for a CD-ROM with it and it didn't work very well (gotta go buy me Director I think).
When I see a picture with a lens flare, or with careless use of PS filters, or animated flames, I get PO'ed. Or when I see a website with that retarded 'rippling water' java applet. Same goes for when someone loads up a Flash movie with craploads of imported raster graphics and sound and the same goes when I see a model that's WAY over the poly count it needs ("HMM, I think I'll let this completely FLAT surface have 10k polys, because I'm STUPID.")

What I mean is, if you don't know what the hell you're doing, going out and reading a dozen tutorials will NOT make you a pro. Go on, practice, make your overloaded movies and your cheesy graphics and your badly textured models. Use the frikken lens flare and emboss filters EVERYWHERE. Have a field day. But cripes, until you learn to work properly, DON'T go around posting your beginner crap to make yourself feel like a badass. Post it for critiques, show it to friends, rework it and show it again, learn, think, develop. But become a badass (as far as us geeks go) before acting like one.

And I -know- what I'm talking about because I used to be that kind of complete ignorant asshole (maybe I still am, but if I am, don't tell me: ignorance is bliss, and now I have a diploma that makes me think I'm not).

I even keep my very FIRST crap online just so I can look at it and scare myself into doing things properly.

No, you can't see it, my shame is my own.

::shrugs::Didnt feel like starting a new topic…

 Well...Um...HAPPY NEW YEAR YA'LL
Hope you guys get a lot of gifts an stuff.
