Where is the line?

So, after last nights risque broadcast of 'Days of Passion' by NLM, my mind started thinking about how much adult content is in the game in various forms. What I'd like to know is where is the line? At what point have we gone too far with it? Have we passed it already?

Gimme some feedback on this …

~ J

Let's see, are there any players who are under 18?  I'd say that the whole point of this game is to paint a picture of a dark future. That can't be done without the proper dosage of sexually risque content. I'm guessing we knew what we were getting into as we signed up, and anyone who is offended by it will simply remove themselves from it.

SD just wouldn't be the same if it was too censored. And I come from a solid Christian and highly moral background. I don't know how many of you realize this, but most of the things that happen in this game and even that my own character does are against everything I am and everything I believe. That's the fun of it for me, I've projected myself into a place where my standards no longer exist.  Withmore just wouldn't be right without the adult content, that's my opinion.

Yes, there are players that are under 18, we discourage it, but we don't screen for it.
Well, it's a tough call, because one man's blastphemy is another man's fetish. I personally would like to see more 'sexual situtations', like the Orifice, or advertisements which sell using sex.

Anal, felatio, cunnalingus, straight, gay, whatever, there's going to be alot of if around, and people are generally (in my experience) ok with that.

But then you enter into the more gray area: What about topics that are taboo in all but the most raunchy of groups? Topics like golden showers/anal excrement consumption, incest, rape, and under age sex? On one hand most of these are gaurenteed to make someone's stomach churn, but on the other hand, we are in the unique position of being able to 'show' these things without accualy 'doing' these things. If it makes someone's stomach chun, perhaps that was the desired effect? You have a unique canvas for painting your pictures on, descriptive, linear, and in some cases interactive. I for one say 'use it to your best advantage'.

The fact that there's little public sex (believe me, there's a fair bit going on behind closed doors) allows there to be a certian -shock value- when something does broach the subject, and to that extent I think that should be preserved as well as possible, so repeats of sex shows on TV would probablly take away from it. But that first time someone sees 3 girls going at it in graphic detail on the TV, I bet they'll be suprised.

Just my 2 chyen.

weeee long ranty thing… (written and posted before reading Kevlar's tibbit... damnit... me and my slow typing ability)

see, personally, i'm the type of person that doesn't get offended very easily by any sort of adult content. so not having been around to see this broadcast, i'm assuming from the name "days of passion" that it was of a sexual... er... sensual? uhm... whatever you wanna call it... nature.

without having seen the moment mentioned, all i can say is, there isnt much that you can convey in text that would offend me youd have to dig very deep to find something, so on that note, i dont think the game has crossed any sort of line, yet. i havent witnessed or been involved in anything that would offend me.. and you know what? if it did? its my choice to be logged in its also my choice to go you know what? this offends me you sick fucks. im going to leave now. and i WOULDNT blame anyone for the offensive content because we all know that the game can have those moments and we all know (at least we SHOULD know) that we consciously chose to expose ourselves to SD. there are plenty of warnings about the nature of the game, so the excuse of i didnt know there would be *fill in the blank* doesnt really fly

i think that its up to the player to realise just whats all fun and games and being in character and what they really dont feel comfortable participating in... even if their char in game would be just dandy with the situation... and if you honestly cant handle something in game make a new char or change your char so that you wont be exposed to it we all have things we dont enjoy Rping.. (im assuming this of course, feel free to tell me im wrong.) whatever i dont want to RP well, i tailor my char and RP so i wont have to be exposed to it. someone might say thats not fully getting into character but christ.. its just a game in the end and we are- here to have fun and not have an unpleasant experience.... right?

but of course, im 22... so a bit above that oddly magical number of 18. so i dont have a parent that can sue people for exposing me to *gasp* boobies and peepees.

*teeheehee*

also to continue my pointless rant, i find violence and actions of bigotry to be far more offensive then sex and anything to do with sexuality fine i guess im one of those free love (between consenting adults of course) condonin peace lovin hippies ;-) however i know that violence is part of this game cause of the *cue scary music* dark future theme we got goin here so in this context it does not offend me. in this context its been interesting to see just how much i can contradict what i personally believe in as well

but back to that line you asked about in a game like SD you have sex and violence that serves.. or is supposed to serve as a sort of plot device. so let me use a hypothetical example

lets say a criminal gang starts up a pedophile ring of kidnapped and purchased BP children as a plot device this would be inoffensive to me, because the idea of child prostitution is not an issue we have never been exposed to, be it news or personal accounts in real life... we know it happens a horrific amount right now so it definitely wouldnt be absent from the streets of a city such as Withmore, and I have- seen references to child prostitution every so often in the game. the use of a gang such as this would make interesting RP now this is where the grey area of offendability crops up lets take it a step further i still wouldnt be offended, maybe a bit on guard but not really offended if people played characters that wanted to hire child prostitutes if your playing a corpie shit who gets his kicks off molesting anything with a pulse after selling peoples hopes and dreams to the chopping block all day long... well you gota play the char

what WOULD offend me is if there was RP involving any sort of sexual situation in that context, doubly so if a player would be underage, and even more so if very underage this would cross a very bright blinking line for me. its like the difference between seeing a movie where the plot-line is about child prostitution and seeing a movie that IS child porn.

the things is if i ever came across such a situation would i take my own advice and say this offends me you sick fucks, and leave without a complaint? or because it crossed my personal line, would i complain?

but now enough with the hypothetical example because i have to wonder... how do you control a plot device into spiralling across that line when each player has their own personal line? i guess this isnt really an answer but more questions for ya Johnny. :)

and you know what? if something happens in game that really offends you maybe it should be brought up to be discussed, just like Johnny brought up the question of if the line has been crossed yet *shrugs*

*hrms* i do hope something of a contributing nature came out of all that :P

oh.. and just to mention after reading Kevlar's post… i think there is a major difference to 'seeing' things like on NLM, on the street, in a bar etc etc... and participating in things.

i doubt anything i 'see' in the game would offend me.... but hey... like i said.. nothing much does anyways *grin* and that includes the shit you just mentioned Kevlar...

except for the use of children in a sexual nature.... and even then.. if it was something on TV or seen on the street.. it would be "ambient atmosphere" (one that would make my stomach churn yes.. but still the atmosphere of the dome...)

but a situation on the other hand with players

i guess that's my line...

I'm still 17 for a couple months yet, I know of one other 17 year old–but age is extremely, extremely relative.  I knew more about the world in general, be it realities in other countries/obscure religions/sex fetishes/etc/etc when I was 12 than is most likely proper for a normal psyche, but I know not everyone is like that:
-But-
Think about where we are playing. Anyone who's going to stay around long enough to really participate is someone who understands and is comfortable with Cyberpunk, it's atmoshphere, it's inhabitants, etc.
So, I guess I'm saying, let your shit fly. If someone gets offended to the point it's interfering with game play, then take care of it, but I doubt that will happen. If someone can RP on SD well enough to 'be around', then they're mature enough to handle whatever you want to throw--simply my opinion.
But I really think you'll be fine, even if we started seeing enemas and nipple clamps at Phallus.

Hey..it's Cyberpunk. If someone doesn't like what's going on, then either the matter needs to be taken care of, or the person/character doesn't belong here. I think 90% of the time, the latter will be the truth. Not always, but most of the time.

K, I'm out.

Its a tough question because there are really two issues involved. The legal one - where it depends on where you are at when you are viewing whatever it is on the internet you're viewing and how old you are. And then there is the preference or taste issue.

I'm not too keen on underage people being exposed to lewd acts, but that's something you can deal with ICly by not roleplaying those kinds of things around players who are underage. But, even so its up to the GMs to decide what they want to put in SIC/TV/NLM ads and on the TV itself. If the idea of roleplaying things in front of kids gives you the willies ask people their OOC age. Granted, yes some people will lie, but at least then you're mind is clear.

As the character is no longer around I don't think I'm giving away any IC info when I say I played someone who had been forced into child prostitution and got some really great roleplay - some which due to setbacks was lost - out of it.  You can explore other avenues of roleplay like this by including things in your character history and then dealing with them. Not everyone needs to be a hard ass thug booted out of a city by the cops/gangers/their momma who then finds themselves outside the dome waiting to get in.

I personally found the SIC adds for abortion offensive, both ICly and OOCly, but I took it in stride OOCly as it is a game and I'm sure was not intended to offend anyone OOCly.

I think that in the setting like the dome there would be sex and sexual congress of many kinds all over the place. Most especially on RED. Hookers of all ages working the streets and clubs. People getting it on in the bathroom of Carnal - I only know of two couples who've done this - though probably not the one in the Drome. Sex sells even now, in the future as our inhibitions as a society diminish or adapt even more it will sell still but be more blatant. Think about televison commercials when you were a kid and then think about them now.

Sindome should be raunchy and nasty and pushed to its limits, that's the kind of setting it exists in.

If you don't like it you've always got a command at your disposal to use its called the @quit command. Remove your character from the situation if you don't like it.

Now, I've not seen this TV show that was put on because….well I never see them they're only shown while I'm asleep, but I cannot imagine that it was that offensive to many people.

Anyway, that's my two pence as it were.

It takes a lot to offend me, so you aren't even close.  I, like Lotus, am under that magical 18, though it's only 2 weeks now.  But, also consider that you have to be 17 to get into an r-rated movie by yourself or to rent such (though, in my town, a 2 year old could, since the system is optional).  Damn people need to decide between 17 and 18 for when you are old enough, because it changes depending on the subjuect.  Where was I going with this?  Oh yeah.  It's in game and part of the world and despite the fact that I would not agree with many of the things in real life, part of role-playing games is to do something unlike what you do in real life.  I'm standing here, staring off into the distance, and I can even see my line, so no worries about offending me.  And I don't think my parents would sue you.  They know I'm smart enough to make my own choices and that you aren't forcing me into anything and stuff.
I think I got my point across.
I think that I say for all with my short post:

Every teenager (12-17) is a hormone bomb, being so 98% of the males have already seen porn. And 75% of the females that have internet access and and e-mail account have seen or browsed thru some kind of porn.

So we're cool.

Damn spanish women.

Those stats don't fly in the US, not for a minute.

And it doesn't stop at 17.

Umm, what Johnny?

Quote: from Johnny on 3:13 pm on Dec. 9, 2002[br]Damn spanish women.

Those stats don't fly in the US, not for a minute.

You're saying you never sent a pic of man with a really big shlong to a female friend of yours just to see their reaction?

And I'm not spanish! I'm Brazilian!!!

Yeah, I'm the spanish one, not him.
After paroozing (*booms over the board intercom*spell check on word two please, also kind of the whole raunchy connotation too right?) through this topic, I do not think any line has been crossed, nothing can disturb me, least not in text.  This is game it's not real, an NLM snuff film wouldn't bother me, maybe my character, but not me.  A real one would.  As for the female adult players (check I swear, dammit mothers!) who think that underage players should be carefully avoided in these situations I must disagree.

I've been on this game for what 2  years straight, and even a year before that for a few months.  I remember XM days, bishop days, a long long long time ago.  I would have been maybe 13.  I'm 17 at the moment, underage by legal standards.  I have 2 problems with being judged my age like that.  How does anyone know how mature I am?  I know 12 year olds more responsible than my own father, and I know 17 year olds, who can handle this stuff.   GImme a sec I lost the second problem in my head…I dunno maybe it was sorta the same thing.  Maturity is not birthdays.  It's what people dedal with and how.

I signed on knowing what I got myself in to, and the day that Sindome starst screening for age, and changing RP for minors is the day I quit.

Now Most of the underage people here are male, which means they are already horny and porn is a daily thing, (99% of guys masturbate, and 1% lie about it right?)

Enough of the useless facts...no lines crossed. Keep it up.

Hrm. Opinions, opinions.

The sexuality issue isn't a matter of black and white, of whether or not the line is crossed. The fact is, there /isn't/ a line to cross. Sexuality for the most part is a gray area that may well be debated online and IRL for ages to come. There will always be those wishy-washy individuals who kinda like sex, but are afraid to become fully immersed in the subject matter, and then of course, there will always be those who take things en extremis, who are either completely against explicit sexuality or so engrossed in the subject matter that they do no good for the MOO. The players of this MOO are too varied in their interests, ages, backgrounds, and maturity levels to properly gauge whether or not sex and sexual situations in-game is truly a good or bad thing. It's all a matter of perception and sensitivity.

Personally, I'm for sex. It adds ambience, grit, that je ne ce quoi to the MOO. I doubt many people will disagree when I say that Neuromancer would not have gone as nicely had Gibson chunked aside the sensual, sexual nature of Case and Molly's relationship. Same thing goes here. Sex is a common theme in most, if not all things dark and cyber.

It's more than just the coital act, because sex is inherent in /everything/. From the above-board as well as underhanded movement of goods and services in the post-modern world, to the synthesis of flesh and metal, hell, to the collision of two rival factions, or on an even simpler level, the dodges and feints of two fighters in a knife duel, sex is everpresent. So what if we see a some actors bumping uglies on the in-game boob tube. We–admin and players alike--are surrounded by sex--if not by the act, then by the symbolism. And going one step further, I'd like to point out that even /if/ the MOO decided to cut out all the heavy breathing and wet, sloppy smackings, we'd still be inundated by the entire sex-is-good perception that's rolling around on TV, in books, and in everyday life in the real world.

So, I've got two things to say. If you don't like the sex, move into a convent or monastary, cuz you ain't gonna get away from seeing it; and if yer such a perv you wack off to what's going on /on a TV, on a MOO/, you either  need some help or a new computer, cuz, baby, there's better web browsers than Lynx.

(And one more thing to remember folks.  This is a MOO, it's not a place to cyber.  You wanna cyber, go to IRC or Yahoo--unless, of course, it's IC ;-)

Just my two shares of Enron.

We fall together as time pauses between breaths
In the space of one heartbeat, we shudder,
Bodies commingled, souls united,
Love, and lust, and pain make us one
Flush of sweat and blood like so much rain
Senses burn intensely as we kiss in the darkness
Wanting, needing, devouring each other
In that twilit place between life and death
Cut me deeper, lover, as I cut you
