Cyberpunk music

What music do you associate to the Cyberpunk genre?

Here's my list:

Trans Am (mostly Future World and after)
Devo (ALL of it)
Black Sabbath (pre-1979, of course - especially Hand Of Doom)
David Bowie (The Hours… album specifically- though I admit that's probably because of Omikron. New Angels Of Promise just gives me that CPunk feel)
Rush (only sometimes - like Distant Early Warning, for instance)
Jing Ling by Saju
some Yngwie Malmsteen instrumentals (his singer blows. REALLY.)
Ministry (particularly the album A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste)
Dream Theater (although maybe a bit too optimistic for CP)
Kraftwerk
a couple Rammstein songs (particularly their cover of Das Modell)
Daft Punk
Tunnelvision
Zeni Geva (particularly Dead Sun Rising and Nai Ha - though I'm told that Skullf*** is very good, and I've heard good things about KK Null's non-Zeni Geva Yona Kitt.)
Walter Carlos' rendition of Ode To Joy (from Clockwork Orange)
Ozzy (No More Tears and prior, particularly the Randy Rhodes days)
Geinoh Yamashirogumi (if you like your CP surreal)
Men Without Hats (though I'm fairly certain that's only me..)

Music for the Sindome Generation…

Digital Gunfire

Amped Out

Anything that carries the 'tude.

Live. Breath. Be.

I personally listen to StainD while playing sindome. It has that hopeless "I hate this place and I want to die" feel to it.
Gods. You people desperately need to look into some industrial.

Or hip hop/rap.

Or something…less middle-class, male, and white angsty in nature. MMMmmm...Prodigy. Start there. Or go click on Rastus' links and get some decent streaming stuff off the web.

*snickers* StainD. Heh.

I said Devo. They STARTED industrial - that is, before industrial metal came about. And Ministry, who turned industrial into industrial METAL.
I'm not much for hip hop (unless you count G.Love And Special Sauce). I generally like very few post 1990's bands - I'm mostly a metal-progressive-blues-folk guy. And I mean REAL metal, not the wimpy stuff that can pass for metal these days, primarily composed of young pseudogoths who can't play a guitar properly, I won't mention any names *cough*A Perfect Circle*cough*Stabbing Westward*cough*.
I also like Eagleslayer 2000 .
And I'm talking about music that gives one the CP feel, so I can't bloody well list, say, Tom Waits or Ananda Shankar or Nick Cave or Kenneth McKellar or Donovan or Kula Shaker(they wrote Narayan for Prodigy, by the way) or Jimi Hendrix or The Who or Chuck Berry or Corky and The Juice Pigs or….....well you get the picture.

And besides, I'm white, why shouldn't I like 'white' music?
Well, actually, I'm more beige off-white-ish. Not that it really matters anyway.

Mmm, Ministry…

Cubanate... yes, yes... o/`Singing HATE song... o/`

Placebo - for those less industrial moments.

Rancid/any good punk - For the less depressing areas of red. Fuller, Drome, Carnal...

But mostly... Digital Gunfire

Billy Idol - Oki, most of the 'Cyberpunk' flop album sucks, but a couple of the tracks are on my playlist… and some of his older stuff rocks.

Bowie - Very necessary.

I think Nicad's reference was more to the group entity of 'white middle class angst' music... Mmmm, Green Day.

Of course, when it comes down to it, there's only -one- thing that'll get me -really- into the Sindome atmosphere...

BRITNEY!

o/`Oops, I did it again… o/`

Oh yeah, hey, let's not forget STYX! Anyone here old enough to remember Kilroy Was Here?

Great, now I have Mr.Roboto stuck in my head.

Gah. I -should- have m4d haet for Styx, really, just for the number of times I've caught myself humming Come Sail Away. Graah.

Metal is good, yes.

Kittie most certainly gives this place an edge.

So does Type- O Negative.

Yes, The Prodigy and Rammstein as well.  A certain remix of Prodigy's Diesel Power reminds me of borgs and streetsams...

The Doors at times.

Scarily, Bjork

I'm starting to agree with Nic, cyberpunk is too white.
*runs screaming into the room, butt nekid with green spiked hair*

"PUNK WILL NEVER DIE !!!!"

*keeps right on running out the side door before he's nailed with spare clothing to cover up his white arse*

IGGY! IGGY! IGGY!
Fear Factory
Ministry
Def Tones
Disturbed
Dope
Faith no more
Filter - Hey man nice shot
Orgy
I'm thinkin' that the main stream would be more J-pop type stuff. With all the japanese influence and anime resources, japanese pop music would definitely be on the IC #1 hit lists.

I don't really know any though…hrm...

Did somebody say J-Pop?

Ayumi Hamasaki! J-Pop Diva!:) She's awsome!
Dragon Ash == J-rap
SES J-pop

When I'm walking down the Lamb's Wake on a cold night I think of the Theme Song from 'Lain' by Boa Duvet

Aside from that, Some dark techno type stuff, Diesle boy maybe, DJ Columbine, Delta9, The Horrorist

All things I suggest for Cyber Punk, I have Dragon Ash adn Duvet if somebody needs it:)

Hmm, Punk Too? *cough*Hardcore*cough*

Usually when I'm playing I listen to the first Spineshank, Kinda Technoie/Hardcore-ish/Indie thing going on.

As of late though I've been listening to the new HATEBREED album*drools* It rocks.  Some VOD, 25 ta life, Strife, BloodForBlood(for all you punkers).

Actually Right now, I'm trying to get Rig into his scottish char so I'm listening to Pipe music…..Highland pipes not those whinny Irish types:)

(Edited by DaveK at 9:11 am on Jan. 31, 2002)

If you want, I have *almost* the entire BlueBells of Scotland Lenneth McKellar album in mp3s, including Hieland Laddie(!!!), they're only in 56kbps, but its the best damn scottish folk you're gonna get.
Heh, for my char, I listen to more contemporary Irish stuff, like the Pogues and Blood Or Whiskey.

As for japanese music, I'd go with X-Japan, Pizzicato Five, Guitar Vader, the Geinoh Yamashirogumi and of course the band that started the wave of Japanese death/noise metal: Zeni Geva (which is german for 'Money Violence' - so everyone check out Maximum Money Monster =P)

Shonen Knife…

I say no more.

Actually… I forget, but the tune for me that I always picture playing in the opening credits of 'Sindome: The Movie' is the opening theme from Bubblegum Crisis, I forget which. To me it is the purest musical expression of a sprawling near future metropolis and -always- sends a shiver down my spine. That said, it -may- have been the UK releases of Bubblegum Crisis, I can't say for sure. Sounds alot like something Bowie or Idol did in the 80's, but I forget which song...
Speaking of Bowie, did you name one of the Sinners after a Bowie song intentionnally or is it just a very strange coincidence?
I was under the impression that the gang and NPC Judge names were generated by our random name generator, but I -could- be wrong. If that isn't the case, I'm pretty sure it was either FireStorm or Damon that named them.
BG Crisis 2040…or Crash? DNA:)
I'm consider myself a Cyberpunk music artist.
Check out my tunes and decide for yourself. I need some fellow cyberpunks to pump my musix and spread the datavibe….

Hmmm, older Skinny Puppy(Bites is an excellent album to listen to while playing) along with Chu Ishikawa (did the soundtrack to Tetsuo: The Ironman and Tetsuo 2: The Bodyhammer…both excellent cyberpunk films). Also some industrial. Industrial crust is my favorite along with Cybergrind(i.e. Savage Man Savage Beast and Microphallus). Nine Inch Nail's "Pretty Hate Machine". And thats about all I can think of right now.

Jharrod

I'm usually listening to Rage Against the Machine…some of their stuff is pretty good ambient in a sense; stuff like Mic Check, Darkness, etc. Just my 0.02
Am I the only one to think that the musical background best suited for our beloved li'le moo can only pass through some of electro-funk/neo-electro's biggest names?

Hell yeah, Covenant and other industrial bands totally rock (you can find major electro influences on some of their songs too, the gothyish variant, sort of speak, I'd revert to Fischerspooner as an example).
Hell yeah, I've been listening to way too many visual-key Japanese bands like Luna Sea, Malice Mizer, Dir en Grey, L'Arc en Ciel (course Mini Moni always seems to pop out in between, Mari's soooo cute ^^).
And sure, there's times when I'm so blown away that all I can really stand are nice ambient tunes like those by the hands of DJ Krush (his work with Toshinori Kondo totally rox), Boards of Canada, Kid Loco, Jazzanova and so on.

But hey… what the hell am I listening like 70 percent of the times?

You guessed... stuff like Japanese Telecom and Le Car, their harsh smacking beats and eerie synth grooves;
Mouse on Mars and Funkstorung, they simply took electro and drove it through a phreakin' paper shredder, so pretty sweet;
Man Parrish? Mantronix? Sure, bring out that sugary ol' skewl flava', origins are always nice to be praised;
Remember that gotyish stuff I was talkin' 'bout? I think I kinda made this up but hell, I sacked both Miss Kittin & The Hacker and G.D. Luxxe along with Fischerspooner inside;
Fancy old mod-werks that blasted off the amiga demoscene? Okay, I read ya but still haven't found -the- group for it, just a few loose tunes like Clatterbox - Power up / Computer Rockers - Get Ready / Dopplereffekt - Denki No Zuno;

And then you still have way too original projects such as Console an electro-pop styled solo project from the wizard behind The Notwist;

And… and... man, way more but you're already gonna flame my ass to death for this post so I betta' just grow an extra pair of legs, won't even dare to look back.

.

(Hummmm... wait a minute, can you believe this shit?! The bastard goes through all this and manages to forget Kraftwerk?! Rant his hairy ass!!!)

Apollo 440 is one that needs to be added to the list methinks.

Also some of Sneaker Pimps just seems to fit for me…

Wow, you guys make me feel old and young at the same time…

How's about:

VnV Nation?(and 'Electronaut' should definately be the SD theme)
Wolfsheim?(hope you speak Denmarkian)
Chicks on Speed?(KALTES KLARES WASSER!)
Apoptygma Berserk?
Switchblade Symphony?
Underworld?(I'm invisible!)

ANY EBM?
and how can you forget Nine Inch Nails?

*sigh*

Doh, i just realized I forgot one very important band myself….

Some Judas Priest albums are particularly cyberpunk, 'Painkiller' comes to mind as one example.
