On Vehicles and Purchases Of

A lot of people have ordered cars in the last little while, and a few of you are getting upset that your car isn't there.

Here is an explanation of -how- dealerships in Withmore City work, and hopefully you can understand things a bit better.

Withmore city is a space preimium location, there isn't a hell of a lot of room for the 65 million people crammed into the mile high dome. So, in terms of automobiles, there isn't the type of showroom dealerships you think of around today. There just isn't the space in Withmore to have a huge parking lot with every coloured car you want on it. It wouldn't be feasable or economical, the land alone would make the dealership non-cost effective.

So, instead, things are run much like a Porsche dealership. Typically when you purchase a Porsche, you go into the show room and look at floor models, and then you pick a colour, interior, extras, and there is a car that is -MADE TO ORDER- for you. You even get little phone calls from the factory when it gets painted, and when it gets on the boat, and when it arrives.

In Withmore, due to space and cost constraints, things are the same way, only a hell of a lot less personal. You put in an -ORDER- for a car based on what you see in the showroom, and then in a factory the car is made, then shipped into the city for you to pick up.

Aikon pointed out that in a real new car dealership there are new cars ready to drive off, which is true. In 2003, in North America where there is a ton of land to spare. But this is Withmore, it's 65 million people crammed into a dome just over a mile high and 14 miles in diametre.

I hope this clarifies how the showroom/car sales system works in Withmore.

That explanation would be cool somewhere in the dealership. Perhaps a bunch of displays that show the process.

1. Look through spec charts
2. enter choices into computer
3. slide bank card through the machine
4. The car will be manufactured immediately arriving here in withmore in <x> ammount of days.

might even show the process that said factory uses to make the car.

*shrugs*

idea

How you purchase a car is thus:

1) You go into the dealership
2) you look at showroom models
3) you access a kiosk that has order info and specs
4) you insert a chyen deposit and place an order
5) You wait for a message from the dealership in you NLM inbox when your car is ready, it states it takes between 1-2 days I belive. We will look at adjusting that for later.

*wink*

I'm just gonna stick my fingers in my ears about any and all complaints around the dealership and remind you all that its the first version.

Why the delay? Because behind the scenes is an approval/creation process that isn't finished fully because the demand for vehicles is light (OOCly ofcourse) and I've moved on to over more important code.

The two vehicles that have been delivered have required CUSTOM code to fulfill the requested features. Once enough custom jobs are done, I'll have an idea what I can make available for standard optional things.

Vehicle fulfillment is very very new, as such, it will change.

The ordering process needs to support cred chips to debit your accounts.

Will I implement payment plans? Not likely, it'd get abused by twinks.

Oh, and examining vehicles was fixed. I closed 12+ bugs that all reported the examine was broken.

Why not have payment plans?  Just put some kind of gps in the vehicle and when the person doesn't pay, send in the repo guys.
like I don't get enough complaints when you guys can't pay your rent on time :P
It would give players with secure tech, and those with driving but no money something to do.  Hell, you could even throw the auto tech skill in I'm sure.
Now, a break down.
Say you start a payment plan on a car that cost 100 grand, figure 20k down and 20k a month, maybe after interest you have 120-140k which is 6-7 months of 20k a month.  I know I could pay 20k a month and still have plenty for rent and other shit.  Assuming the player lives that long, they own the car.  And better cars just cost more money, and the longer you take to pay, the more interest you have to pay.
Thing is, realistically, payment plans/financing plans at auto dealerships are always subject to credit approval. Which means you need a good credit rating and a real job.

I can think of maybe 4-5 characters who meet those requirements, and they wouldn't require a payment plan in order to buy a car anyway cause cars are dirt cheap. The most expensive car is, what, 150k? That's roughly 7500$ USD.

Okay, I suppsoe that makes sense.
i'll just send some money via paypal and you guys can put some chyen into my char's account? sound good?

he said fool

one thing though, if you did live in a city with however many millions of people there would surely be more than one car dealorship to take your business to  espically if one of them was dicking you around…

unfortunately this is not the case currently... now am I saying we need another car lot already.. not really, but I am saying if someone has a monoploly when by all rights they shouldn't  then they should not act as if they do...

my point being: I'm impatient. if you don't have what I want when I want it (espically if you said you do)   then I go elsewhere..it should be taken into consideration that in this case that is not an option..  now if you guys are working hard trying to get a car for everyone who put the deopsit down then good for you, and thanks... if there is no RL backlog and you are holding out because of the rush on a certan car then please rethink what you are doing..

hell of course there is a rush because this is the first car lot... if there were one all along then the rush would be non existant..  but in a city of so many millions I would think that you guys would not want us to rp as though this is the first car lot, ever in such a large city...

this post is kinda broken cause it was the first thing i did as of waking up this morn, but I hope I got my point across..

I thought they once said that since this is still considereed a testing period.. (beta testing right?) tha if something new got added in, we were supposed to RP like it had always been there… so Icly, it's not new and theres another car lot on RED FYI... it's just... crappy or something.

SO SHUT UP!

ok that -might- have been uncalled for.

Okay, let just address your point about 'there being more lots in Withmore than just one because of size'

1) If we were to build an actuall physically to scale version of Withmore City, with all the rooms and streets that would be in it, with all the thousands and -THOUSANDS- of buildings, the MOO would be ten times, nay, a thousand times larger than it is now, and you would need to walk 300 rooms just to get to the drome from Westinghaus. Obviously there are certain elements that you have to fill in with your imagination. Just because there is only one dealership on Green does not mean that it is the only one in the city, it just means it is the only one we have represented for player use because at this time there is no point in making 2.

2) Your impatience is irrelivant. In the -REAL- world nobody gives two shits if you are impatient. And if you go to a dealership, drop a deposit, and order a car that is custom, you better belive that you'll loose that deposit if you back out. Plain and simple man. A dealership isn't going to bring in a custom car just for you to back out at the last minute. And like I said above, in terms of the game, that is what ordering a car is. You order it to be made/shipped into the dome when it is ready.

Tough titties if its late. If you want to back out, you'll be saddling the dealership with a car that they may not be able to sell, so they'll gladly keep your deposit and send you packing, and think twice about doing business with you again.

As to the IC reasonings for the lateness, they are perfectly justifiable and logical. There was a demand spike, and the distribution network was unable to fully meet the projected demand on the product, there-for things are late. It happens all the bloody time in the REAL WORLD. It's why there is an entire industry built around shipping and exporting. HELL, there could be a customs snarl, or some red tape toting bastard who wants a bigger bribe to fast track em in. You just don't know that, and perhaps if you take the time to root about, if you really give a shit, you could find out something more, a reason for it. But I tell you one thing, the poor sod at the dealership sure ain't gonna have the answers. He's just a wage slave who's got to deal with hundreds of bitch 'where's my car' calls every day…

3) Monopolies: Welcome to cyberpunk, where a monopoly isn't just common, it's expected. Live with it, it's part of the genre. Companies have merged and merged and merged to the point where there's hardly any free enterprise, just a bunch of big boys running the world.

4) Yes Tool, that was uncalled for.

I hope this helps clarify things for people, and yes, keep the commentary coming, I am more than happy to explain or expand on any issues that you may have thematically, logistically, or gramatically.

:)

I totally understand what you're saying.  the one thing you miss is:  if you are spending mulpitle thousands of dollars in real life on something, espically a car, they are not going to send you packing.. they are going to kiss your ass up and down, and bend over the fuck backwards to get you whatever the hell you want provided you have the money/credit to afford said item.  I challenge you to go into any car dealership and find someone who will treat you rudely.. unless you dress like you're homeless, or are mean to them first it will never happen, and in alot of cases as long as they know you have the cash for said car they won't even care how you dress or treat them because you're about to fork over alot of cash.

if you want us to rp in charcter, well the guy at the lot should carry my balls around for me If I want him too, cause that's what would happen in real life if I put a deposit on the nicest car on the lot. because in real life past present or future nobody is going to have a monopoly on making cars ever, and If you think otherwise you've been reading too much 1984.

oh yeah Iga please don't start explaining grammar to me cause it will take the rest of your nautral life, and if you read my first few historys I'm sure I'm on the english as a second language list…

and I was well aware of the car lot on red, too bad the selection is limited to... uh.... oh yeah 1.  and quentin is no salesman either...:)

In our world yes, they would probably act like you suggested. But this is 65 million people, and no car lot will really have a shortage of customer base, so they' re going to act pretty much however they want.
*ahem*

Speaking of clothing, take a look at what you wore into the dealership m'man. The guy wasn't rude, he was wary, and he said they would do what they could for you. He also said some rich guy bought a pile of em if I remember correctly.

I think it was the beanie and the SHI welders pants that tossed him off. :P But, yes, you are right. There should have been more ass kissing and the like. But really, he was rude, and he was dressed like he came out of a sewer, and I don't even -want- to know what he smelled like.

:P

But, none the less, your car is on the way, slowly, and surely.

yes I wasn't dressed well, but I did  shower after going through the sewers before going to the lot.

I will also concede I was slightly rude, but I had good reason…

I guess we're both right/wrong, whatever.

the customer base thing too,  hmm never thought of it like that but even so...

Oh Iga, i wouldnt go into too much detail about the clothes he was wearing.

Chipp walked into the dealership in a business suit, smelling fresh and of his own chosen scent, and he certainly had enough charisma to get by.

Yet he wasnt kissed on the ass once nor did the guy even remotely pitch the sale. For one who knows so much about how the Porche dealerships work, you dont seem to show that you have ever once spoken to a car salesman.

I don't see why a corpie car salesman on Gold would fawn over some dude in worker's clothes and a silly hat. Unless he thought he was on Candid Camera 2088. And shower or not, if your Charisma isn't up to snuff, you still don't smell very good. Course, I don't go around sniffing people so I wouldn't know who has what charisma. You can't ask for division of the classes and have it go only one way.

You wanna be fawned over? Bring a Judge in full uniform with you. Hee.

good call  murph, workers clothes definately indicate money of some sort…
Yeah, but welder's clthing, IE, manual labour outfits indicate LITTLE money. Try showing up in a McChikken mascot costume, while you're at it.
I am not here to inflate someones sense of ego, and neither is a sales man on Green.

Suits are a dime a dozen.

Judges, yes, Murphy is correct.

Just for you Sidd, I'll kiss your ass all the time.

[admin]
fucking players.
[/admin]

I thought the dealership was on GOLD..
It is.

So maybe the sales man on Gold is here to inflate someones sense of ego ;).

I am not here to point out the obvious, and neither is the sales man on Blue.

Erm.. *cough*

:)

Murphy, I did that once.. it was so cool.  and then wehn somehting bad happened.. the car sales man was like OH MY GOSH!!!! he bout shit himself… muhhahaha
This was the only topic I could find about cars ICly, so I'll post this here.

I think you should be able to lock a cars doors from the outside, even if you aren't authorized to use the car.  Think about it, in real life, you just open the door, hit the lock button, and shut the door.  You can't do that on SD because then you can't get out of the car!

Just my two chy.
