SIC and -YOU-

Clarity please.

Do SIC's pass images or just thought/voices?

Do the new SIC ads work? they show images in your head?

Or are text only ones better? Some people hate the SIC (we need a command to turn em off) do these make it worse? Personally i love the SIC…much better than the TV's but i like them too.

Discuss (nicely)

I was under the impression we were to avoid ascii images like the plauge on SIC.

But that Oriface one is so cool…

I always wondered. I never use visual..but i kinda like the idea…makes the media THAT much more engulfing...

Uses more of the senses...

I don't agree with being able to control people...that's what worries me...if you can do images, can you do hypnosis???

Doubtless this topic will rage for a while so here's my personal view…

SIC doesn't directly effect any of your sense, but instead 'suggests' things for your brain to interpret as it will, much as we each have individual interpretations of things we see, feel, smell, touch and hear on a daily basis. While we all encounter roughly the same things, the exact thoughts and sensations stirred in each person could be subtely different. With the SIC, this 'stimulation' occurs in what you would basically consider to be your imagination.
If you 'talk' over your SIC, the words are 'formed' in my mind, but wether it's your voice I 'hear' depends on how well I know you, otherwise, my mind attempts to fill in the gaps. I don't physically hear your voice, but rather I get the sensation that I would if I imagined you saying something, I place the familiarity of your voice with your words. If you 'broadcast' the smell of rotting cabbages, I receive that 'thought' and -only- the thought, making of it what I will, mentally perceiving the smell of rotten cabbages.

Someone will probably say something about 'SIC terrorism', forcing images and thoughts into someones mind. This can't be done, coz the SIC doesn't have that kind of suggestive power, it would have no more suggestive power than someone standing infront of me and saying certain things or doing certain things making me no more effected by a given thing on the SIC than I would be if the same thing were described to me face to face. I could SIC *smiles* and you would get the suggestion that the sender was happy etc. And I can basically ignore any given thing, simply choosing to ignore it, much as you might choose to ignore someone who's conversation disinterests you.

By that rational, anything in a SIC broadcast is totally abstract, make of it what you will. It works in the nature of the game, since text, even in fancy ASCIII patterns, conjours up images probably unique in each of use same as we all picture what we read in the game differently.

I'd also say this would be the easiest format to integrate into the game. It's basically impossible/impractical to police what people say/type on the SIC. Screaming at people for typing *smiles* *hugs* 8) etc is never going to work. While personally I don't like to see smileys, I deal with em, but *smiles* *tickles* *claps* I find generally acceptable.

Basically I consider it nothing more than a subconcious ICQ.

I don't know, I'd rather see *laughs* *giggles* even *hrms* then smile tickles hugs, because those are physical type things, and the way that your brain inturperates them isn't going to be like somebody giving you a hug. laughing you can hear, sometimes you can "hear" somebody hrm…..

as for ascii art in sicads, I think its great it adds a little bit more life to text based game. besides ascii is cool!:) have you ever played Quake rendered in ascii???? its fucking great...ok I'm a geek but so what!:)

Did you say… ASCII... Quake?  I wanna see I wanna see!
Quake in ASCII? IMHO, that sounds gay as hell. Now, if you want to get into the point of saying that, for example, there's a version of FFVII available for TI-86 calculators, I'll sit up and pay attention and beg until you give it to me. Otherwise… bleh. I've always thought ASCII was annoying as hell, because the first uses I ever saw for it were back in the day for AOL hack programs. Ick. AOL sucks, and so do all the programs to hack it. But, I do enjoy seeing the ASCII kinda graphics in the opening of a MOO, or the occasional graphic  inserted into some random place for a better description (ie: map). So keep it simple, unoffensive, and it's all gravy.
I don't think that being able to turn off a SIC, specifically SICADs is something that would be an option. Those of you who read 1984 remember that the displays couldn't be turned off and all party members were subject to the propaganda 24/7. Such would be the way with SICADs. The corpies would be very certain that no such option existed so that their ads could reach the masses without any obstructions. Our current media does much of the same thing with the Internet. (Spam, Pop-ups, Blind links) Just my thoughts.
It's funny to hear a player say that… I'd -love- to see the TV's and SICADs locked on so you couldn't possibly switch them off, but you'd be -AMAZED- how much we have to deal with players crying and whining about it on the occasions that we do. Infact, originally you couldn't ignore the SICADs or TV's, but both features were added due to massive demand...

That said, I've heard -TWO- players say they're 'for' them being unignorable... and one of them would be Jackson. I know of one other player who's been playing SD almost every night for over a year who still watches -every- single TV and SIC ad because mass media bombardment -IS- the future.

Why do people whine and cry for the ability to ignore TV/SIC? The only argument I've heard is 'because they're spammy'. I've actually seen complaints from players acusing us of bombarding them with unwanted spam, like it was something hideously evil of us to do... Ya know what? You want to see spam? You should see the amount of data I have to watch -continuously- from the MOO. Feh.

And since we're on the topic, how many people have seen -any- of the TV broadcasts I did in the months running up to the start of 30 days? Christ, I did broadcasts at times when not one single connected player was watching the TV's. Not to mention the response to 30 days has been -pathetic-. Like, WTF do you people want? Would you rather we just gave you millions of chyen, uber-weapons and a few thousand UE each to spend? Given the choice between taking part in an extended plot for 5000+ chyen per day, idling in SHI and pickpocketing/doing Bruce runs -everyone- is choosing to do the mundane daily coded grind. Do you people come here to RP or WHAT? So far -one- player has netted 25,000 chyen and a Progia-9 cell phone in prizes for less than an hours effort per night. Kinda pisses on that 100 chyen an hour you're all getting at SHI, no?

Useless fuckers.

Pah, me and Kiyo woulda gotten one of those 5000 if it wasn't for the fact that I was too bleedin' retarded to see that the Doodle of whom I was in the presence of was only a Doll. (call it media hype hysteria if you will, but I accept the fact that I was retarded)

On another note, I like all the TV ads and Ad-blimp broadcasts AND the SICads. Yes, it's annoying at first when you're not quite 'into' the game, but you learn to tune them out or get used to them just like all the ads and billboards and videoboards(got a few of those downtown here) outside IRL and damn it, I've only been here about a week and Frikken McChikken is already a familiar name to me. I think it does wonders for immersion. It fits in nicely with all the descriptions and whatnot. Damn, this MOO has the best writing I've ever SEEN in a MUD/MOO/OTHERACRONYM. Even though I KNOW I have newb immunity, when you're hanging off a ladder at 11 stories, you DO feel stuck with the fantastic ambient writing. Maybe that should be a poll, if it hasn't been done. 'Should ads be ignorable?' or somesuch.

And if they stay ignorable, well, the ones who ignore 'em are missing out on a great part of the game. Their loss, not mine.

Ok so I've been playing this game for about 9 months, so I decided it was about time I actually broke my silence and posted something.

I'd love to go after the 30 days stuff, only, the clue is given out after I go to bed, and the token is found by the time I wake up. So, geography is my reason for not participating.

The rest of you need a kick in the arse. Get  out there and find that Imp!

Sometimes, when I'm puppeting NPCs, I can see all SICADS and Commercials twice…

*giddy*

I'm surprised hardly anyones trying actually, it does take a bit of work, and the clues are a bit ambiguous, but it's well worth the effort it does take.

oh heavens.

I am happy to see I am not the only player who loves the SIC and TV ads to bits. They were, after all, the reason I went from a Guest to a registered PC. It was the sort of attention to atmospheric detail that made me say 'Hey, this place rocks.'

When I'm around, I'm trying to do the 30 days announcement earlier, between 5 and 6:30 Pacific.
I have the same problem… last night the clue went out when i was asleep... as it had the past week...

Over the weekend, I was not asleep, and found the lil Doodle both times...

Gerik and I are the only ones I know of who have openly said they've searched for him over the SIC... and Gerik, (living 14 hours or so ahead of me...), gets the clue while its something like 4 PM at his place.... i get it around 11 PM... which is too late on a weekday considering i get to wake up at 530 :P

Why not randomize the times? Some around noon mootime, othertimes late at night, others in between... but they have all been between 830 and 11 (CST time) thusfar... different time zones make that unfair for some people.

Look at Gerik, what would he do if all the clues were released during the day for the MOOserver? He may be asleep! (If he sleeps...)

Just my nickle...

Fair comment, will see what we can do about varying the times. The problem kinda lies in the fact that the admin involved suffer from the same time zone related problems you do. We're on at certain times, usually evenings, and the admin are almost exclusively in US time zones and on late at night, having got home from places of work.

If nothing else can be worked out, we'll look into a way of pre-scripting the broadcast/clue setup and scheduling it to happen even if there are no admin around to implement it…
